Cable Side Straight-Arm Pulldown

Single arm pulls cable down in a wide arc sideways.

This isolation movement targets the latissimus dorsi by extending the shoulder with a straight arm. It builds width in the back without involving the biceps.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Stand sideways to the cable machine with feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Grab the high pulley handle with your far hand using an overhand grip.
  3. Step away to create tension while keeping your arm fully extended.
  4. Pull the handle down in a wide arc until it touches your thigh.
  5. Slowly return the handle to the start position with control.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Bending the elbow to turn the move into a triceps pushdown.
  • Rotating the torso to generate momentum instead of using the lat.
  • Allowing the shoulder to shrug up toward the ear during the pull.

TIPS

  • Imagine your arm is a rigid hook pulling the weight down.
  • Keep your torso upright and avoid leaning away from the machine.
  • Focus on driving your elbow down and back rather than pulling with your hand.
