Smith Machine Bulgarian Split Squat
This single-leg movement isolates the quadriceps while challenging stability and correcting muscle imbalances. Using the Smith Machine's fixed vertical track removes most of the balance demand, letting you push closer to failure with heavier loading.
HOW TO DO IT
- Set the Smith Machine bar to roughly shoulder height and load it, then position a bench about one to one-and-a-half foot lengths behind the bar line.
- Stand facing away from the bench with the bar across your upper back and place the top of one foot on the bench behind you.
- Unrack the bar with a small rotation of the wrists and set your front foot far enough forward that the front shin stays close to vertical at the bottom.
- Lower under control until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor, keeping the bar path on the machine's track.
- Drive through the mid-foot and heel of the front leg to stand back up without locking out aggressively.
- Complete all repetitions on one leg, re-rack, then switch sides.
COMMON MISTAKES
- Leaning too far forward onto the front leg.
- Allowing the front knee to collapse inward.
- Placing the rear foot too high on the bench.
- Standing too close to the machine, which forces the front knee far past the toes and shortens the range.
- Bouncing out of the bottom because the guided bar makes the movement feel safer than it is.
- Pushing the bar forward into the uprights, which jams the track and disrupts the rep.
TIPS
- Keep your torso upright to emphasize the quadriceps.
- Drive through the mid-foot of the front leg.
- Ensure your front knee tracks over your toes.
- Let the bar travel straight down the track rather than pushing it into or away from the uprights.
- Use a controlled two-to-three-second descent to make the most of the reduced stability demand.
- Keep the rear foot relaxed on the bench; it is a kickstand, not a driver.
SAFETY
- Maintain a tight core to protect the spine under load.
- Set the safety stops just below your bottom position and never train to failure without them.
- Step out of the machine carefully after re-racking with one foot still elevated.
