How to do it
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with palms facing inward.
- Step forward with one leg, landing heel-first with a wide stride.
- Lower your hips until both knees bend to roughly 90-degree angles.
- Ensure your front knee tracks over your ankle without collapsing inward.
- Push through the front heel to stand and bring the back foot forward.
- Repeat the sequence by stepping forward with the opposite leg.
Common mistakes
- Letting the front knee cave inward during the descent.
- Striking the ground with the toes instead of the heel.
- Leaning too far forward and losing balance.
- Taking steps that are too short to reach proper depth.
Safety
Lower your back knee under control and never slam it into the floor.
Tips
- Keep your torso upright and core braced throughout the movement.
- Drive through the mid-foot of the front leg to stand up.
- Maintain a slight forward lean from the hips, not the waist.
