How to do it
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing inward.
- Descend into a deep squat while keeping your chest up and elbows high.
- Drive forcefully through your heels to stand up quickly.
- Use the upward momentum to press the dumbbells straight overhead.
- Lower the weights back to the shoulder rack position under control.
- Reset your stance before beginning the next repetition.
Common mistakes
- Pressing the weights before the hips have fully extended.
- Leaning too far forward during the bottom of the squat.
- Dropping the elbows and losing the dumbbells off the shoulders.
- Hyperextending the lower back at the top of the movement.
- Letting the knees cave inward as you drive out of the squat.
Safety
Avoid locking out the elbows aggressively at the top to prevent joint strain.
Ensure adequate wrist mobility to support the weight safely overhead.
Tips
- Keep your elbows tucked slightly forward to maintain a stable rack position.
- Time the press to start exactly as your hips fully extend.
- Drive through the mid-foot to maximize vertical force transfer.
- Brace your core tightly to protect your lower back during the transition.
