VARIATIONS

Alternating High Cable Row

Single handle pulled down from a high cable pulley with torso rotation.

This movement targets the latissimus dorsi and upper back using a high cable angle to emphasize vertical pulling mechanics. The alternating pattern increases time under tension and challenges core stability.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Set the pulley to the highest position and attach a single handle.
  2. Stand facing the machine with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
  3. Grab the left handle with an overhand grip and step back to create tension.
  4. Pull the elbow down and back while rotating your torso slightly toward the working side.
  5. Squeeze the lat at the bottom of the movement before slowly returning the arm.
  6. Complete all repetitions for one arm, then immediately switch hands and perform the same number of reps with the other arm.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Using momentum to swing the body instead of isolating the back muscles.
  • Shrugging the shoulders up toward the ears during the pull.
  • Allowing the cable to snap back quickly instead of controlling the eccentric phase.
  • Bending the wrist excessively rather than keeping it neutral.

TIPS

  • Initiate the pull by driving the elbow down, not by yanking with the hand.
  • Keep the non-working arm extended to maintain constant tension on the cable.
  • Rotate through the thoracic spine rather than leaning excessively with the hips.

SAFETY

  • Maintain a neutral spine to avoid lower back strain when leaning back for tension.
