High Cable Rope Pullover

This unilateral movement isolates the latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior on one side at a time, helping correct left-right strength imbalances and improving scapular control and shoulder extension. The offset load also adds an anti-rotation demand on the core.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Attach a rope to a high pulley and stand facing the machine with feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Grab the rope with both hands using an overhand grip, then step back slightly to create tension with the arms fully extended.
  3. Keep your torso upright, core braced, and free hand on your hip or thigh for stability.
  4. Pull the rope down in a wide arc toward your hips, keeping a slight bend in the elbows.
  5. Squeeze the lats hard at the bottom, then return slowly to the fully extended overhead position.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Bending the elbow too much and turning it into a single-arm triceps pushdown.
  • Leaning forward or twisting the torso to use momentum during the pull.
  • Shrugging the shoulder up toward the ear instead of depressing the scapula.
  • Letting the handle snap back up without controlling the eccentric.
  • Rotating the torso away from the machine instead of bracing against the offset load.

TIPS

  • Imagine pushing your elbow down toward your hip rather than pulling with your hand.
  • Keep a slight bend in the elbow throughout to protect the joint.
  • Keep your chest up and shoulders depressed, away from your ears.
  • Resist the pull of the cable trying to rotate your torso; stay square to the machine.
  • Match reps and tempo on both sides to address imbalances.

SAFETY

  • Avoid hyperextending the lower back when pulling the handle to the hip.
  • Keep the free hand supported if balance is an issue.
