Smith Machine Front Squat
Bar rests across front deltoids with elbows high on a Smith machine.
This exercise isolates the quadriceps using the fixed path of a Smith machine to allow heavy loading with reduced balance demands. It builds lower body strength while minimizing stress on the lower back compared to back squat variations.
HOW TO DO IT
- Position the bar across your front deltoids with elbows high.
- Unrack the bar and step forward to clear the hooks.
- Keep your chest up and core tight throughout the movement.
- Lower your hips until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
- Drive through your heels to return to the starting position.
- Step back carefully to rack the bar on the hooks.
COMMON MISTAKES
- Dropping elbows which causes the bar to slip forward.
- Leaning too far forward and shifting load to the lower back.
- Bouncing out of the bottom position instead of driving up.
- Lifting heels off the ground during the ascent.
TIPS
- Keep elbows pointing forward to prevent the bar from rolling.
- Maintain an upright torso to maximize quadriceps engagement.
- Push knees outward slightly to track over your toes.
SAFETY
- Ensure the bar rests securely on the clavicles and deltoids, not the throat.
- Do not lean forward excessively as the fixed bar path can strain the spine.
