VARIATIONS
Smith Machine Lunge Sprint
Legs switch positions in mid-air under a Smith bar.
This explosive lower-body movement builds quadriceps power and rate of force development. The fixed bar path allows for rapid leg switching under load with reduced balance demands.
HOW TO DO IT
- Position the Smith bar across your upper back and step forward into a lunge stance.
- Descend until both knees bend to approximately 90 degrees.
- Explosively drive upward to switch leg positions in mid-air.
- Land softly with the opposite leg forward and immediately descend into the next lunge.
- Repeat the alternating jump motion for the desired duration or repetitions.
COMMON MISTAKES
- Landing with stiff legs instead of absorbing impact.
- Allowing the front knee to cave inward.
- Leaning too far forward during the jump.
- Taking too long between ground contacts.
TIPS
- Drive through the mid-foot to maximize vertical height.
- Keep your torso upright throughout the entire movement.
- Minimize ground contact time to maintain power output.
SAFETY
- Ensure adequate ceiling clearance before jumping with the bar.
- Do not attempt this movement if you have existing knee or ankle instability.
