VARIATIONS

Smith Machine Lunge Squat

Smith bar rests on upper traps for a static split stance.

This exercise isolates the quadriceps and glutes by using the fixed bar path to stabilize the load while lunging. It allows for heavy loading with reduced balance demands compared to free-weight lunges.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Step under the bar and rest it across your upper traps.
  2. Unrack the weight and step one foot forward into a split stance.
  3. Lower your hips until both knees bend to roughly 90 degrees.
  4. Push through the front heel to return to the starting position.
  5. Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Leaning too far forward and shifting focus to glutes.
  • Letting the front knee collapse inward during descent.
  • Taking steps that are too short or too long.
  • Bouncing at the bottom of the movement.

TIPS

  • Keep your torso upright to maximize quad engagement.
  • Drive through the mid-foot of the front leg.
  • Ensure the front knee tracks over the toes without caving in.

SAFETY

  • Do not lock the safety catches while your body is under the bar.
