Decline Barbell Bench Press
Body angled downward to target lower pectorals
This compound push movement targets the lower pectorals while engaging the anterior deltoids and triceps. The decline angle shifts emphasis away from the upper chest to build mass across the lower sternum.
HOW TO DO IT
- Secure your feet under the pads at the top of the decline bench.
- Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width and unrack it.
- Lower the bar slowly until it touches your lower chest.
- Pause briefly when the bar makes contact with your torso.
- Press the weight upward until your elbows are fully extended.
- Return the bar to the rack after completing your set.
COMMON MISTAKES
- Bouncing the bar off the lower chest.
- Flaring elbows out at a 90-degree angle.
- Lifting hips off the bench during heavy reps.
- Using a grip that is too narrow or too wide.
TIPS
- Keep your shoulder blades retracted and depressed throughout the lift.
- Drive through your heels to maintain stability on the angled bench.
- Visualize pushing your hands away from each other at the top.
SAFETY
- Always use a spotter or safety pins when lifting heavy loads.
- Ensure leg hooks are tightly secured before unracking the weight.
