VARIATIONS
Dumbbell Sit-Up
Dumbbell held vertically against the chest
This exercise targets the rectus abdominis and hip flexors by adding external load to the standard sit-up motion. Holding a dumbbell increases resistance, forcing greater core engagement throughout the full range of movement.
HOW TO DO IT
- Lie flat on your back with knees bent and feet secured.
- Hold one dumbbell vertically against your chest with both hands.
- Engage your core and curl your torso up toward your knees.
- Pause briefly at the top while keeping the weight stable.
- Lower your upper back down to the floor with control.
COMMON MISTAKES
- Pulling on the neck with free hands instead of holding the weight.
- Using momentum to swing the upper body upward.
- Allowing the lower back to arch excessively during the descent.
- Dropping the torso too quickly without muscular control.
TIPS
- Exhale forcefully as you lift your torso off the ground.
- Keep the dumbbell pressed tight to your sternum to maintain balance.
- Drive through your heels to prevent legs from lifting off the floor.
SAFETY
- Avoid this movement if you have existing lower back disc issues.
- Do not jerk the weight upward, which can strain the lumbar spine.
