Works

  • Shoulders
  • Abdominals
  • Triceps

How to do it

  1. Stand erect holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing you.
  2. Press the left arm overhead while rotating the palm forward and leaning your torso to the right.
  3. Lower the left weight back to the shoulder as you return your torso to center.
  4. Immediately press the right arm overhead while rotating the palm forward and leaning your torso to the left.
  5. Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning too far sideways and losing vertical pressing alignment.
  • Failing to rotate the wrist during the upward phase.
  • Rushing the tempo and using momentum instead of muscle control.
  • Allowing the lower back to hyperextend during the lateral lean.

Safety

Avoid excessive lateral leaning if you have existing lumbar spine issues.

Ensure full shoulder mobility before attempting the rotational overhead position.

Tips

  • Initiate the lean from the hips rather than rounding the lower back.
  • Drive through the mid-foot on the supporting leg to maintain balance.
  • Keep the non-working elbow tucked close to the ribcage during the press.
