Obliques Abdominals Lower Back Back
How to do it
- Place a barbell across your upper back and stand with feet shoulder-width apart.
- Keep your spine neutral and your head facing forward throughout the set.
- Bend strictly at the waist to one side as far as comfortable.
- Pause briefly at the bottom of the movement before returning to center.
- Repeat the bend to the opposite side to complete one repetition.
Common mistakes
- Using momentum to swing the weight instead of controlling it.
- Rotating the shoulders or hips instead of bending laterally.
- Leaning forward or backward rather than purely to the side.
- Holding the bar too low on the neck causing strain.
Safety
Avoid excessive range of motion that causes sharp pain in the lower back.
Do not perform this movement if you have existing spinal disc issues.
Tips
- Visualize sliding your hand down the side of your leg.
- Keep your hips square and avoid rotating your torso.
- Exhale sharply as you return to the upright position.
