Obliques Abdominals Lower Back Back
How to do it
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart holding one dumbbell in one hand.
- Place your free hand on your hip or behind your head.
- Keep your back straight and head neutral throughout the movement.
- Bend strictly at the waist toward the side holding the weight.
- Lower the dumbbell as far as comfortable while inhaling.
- Contract your obliques to return to the upright starting position.
- Complete all reps, then switch the dumbbell to the other hand and repeat.
Common mistakes
- Using momentum to swing the weight instead of controlled muscle contraction.
- Rotating the shoulders or hips rather than bending purely sideways.
- Leaning forward or backward instead of bending straight to the side.
- Shrugging the shoulder holding the dumbbell during the movement.
Safety
Avoid excessive leaning if you have existing lower back issues.
Do not hyperextend the spine when returning to the upright position.
Tips
- Visualize crushing a grape between your ribs and hip on the working side.
- Keep your hips square and avoid rotating your torso forward or backward.
- Move slowly to maximize time under tension for the obliques.
