Leaning Cable Lateral Raise

This single-arm isolation movement targets the lateral deltoids to build shoulder width and definition. Leaning away from the cable stack increases the range of motion at the bottom of the lift and keeps tension on the side delt through a longer arc.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Set a cable pulley to the lowest position and attach a single handle.
  2. Stand sideways to the machine with the handle in your far hand, using a neutral grip.
  3. Hold the machine frame with your near hand and lean your torso away from the stack.
  4. Let your working arm hang down and slightly across your body under the lean.
  5. Raise your arm out to the side, leading with the elbow, until it reaches shoulder height.
  6. Lower the weight slowly back to the stretched starting position.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Bending the torso forward instead of leaning sideways, which turns it into a rear delt movement.
  • Pulling with the arm instead of the shoulder, using the frame hand to yank the body.
  • Shrugging the traps up toward the ears during the lift.
  • Raising the arm higher than shoulder level.
  • Swinging the body backward to generate momentum.

TIPS

  • Lean from the hips, not by bending at the waist, and keep the torso rigid.
  • Let the arm travel slightly across the body at the bottom to use the extra range.
  • Keep a slight bend in the elbow and lead with the elbow, not the hand.
  • Pause briefly at shoulder height before lowering.

SAFETY

  • Keep the grip on the frame secure so a slip does not cause a fall or a sudden load on the shoulder.
  • Avoid leaning so far that the lower back rounds or the shoulder is loaded in an awkward position.
