VARIATIONS

Smith Machine Step Down

This unilateral exercise targets the glutes and quadriceps to build single-leg strength and stability. It improves hip control and balance while reducing load on the spine.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Stand on a sturdy bench with one foot flat near the edge.
  2. Keep your torso upright and core braced throughout the movement.
  3. Lower your opposite foot toward the floor by bending the standing knee.
  4. Lightly tap your heel to the ground without shifting weight onto it.
  5. Drive through the mid-foot of the standing leg to return to start.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Letting the standing knee collapse inward toward the midline.
  • Pushing off the trailing foot to stand back up.
  • Leaning the torso forward excessively during the descent.

TIPS

  • Keep the knee of the working leg aligned with the second toe.
  • Control the descent for three seconds to maximize muscle tension.
  • Push the hips back slightly as you lower your body.
