Dumbbell Sit-Up

Dumbbell held vertically against the chest

This exercise targets the rectus abdominis and hip flexors by adding external load to the standard sit-up motion. Holding a dumbbell increases resistance, forcing greater core engagement throughout the full range of movement.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Lie flat on your back with knees bent and feet secured.
  2. Hold one dumbbell vertically against your chest with both hands.
  3. Engage your core and curl your torso up toward your knees.
  4. Pause briefly at the top while keeping the weight stable.
  5. Lower your upper back down to the floor with control.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Pulling on the neck with free hands instead of holding the weight.
  • Using momentum to swing the upper body upward.
  • Allowing the lower back to arch excessively during the descent.
  • Dropping the torso too quickly without muscular control.

TIPS

  • Exhale forcefully as you lift your torso off the ground.
  • Keep the dumbbell pressed tight to your sternum to maintain balance.
  • Drive through your heels to prevent legs from lifting off the floor.

SAFETY

  • Avoid this movement if you have existing lower back disc issues.
  • Do not jerk the weight upward, which can strain the lumbar spine.
